During your first visit, you will be evaluated by a licensed therapist with specialized training in lymphedema. You will have an hour of one-on-one time with your therapist, and the visit will also include information on the lymphedema program and education on lymphatic symptoms. You should wear loose and comfortable clothing that allows you to uncover the swollen area, such as a tank top if your arm is swollen and shorts if your leg is swollen.
You will need to bring a list of any current prescriptions, driver's license or ID, insurance card, and our intake forms. You will need to fill out both our HIPPA information release form and intake form.
Treatment is usually daily for three to four weeks, and will include manual lymph drainage and bandaging. Manual lymph drainage is a soft massage - nothing like a Swedish massage - that redirects the lymph fluid to other parts of their body where they have functioning lymph nodes. This will help reduce the swelling of the affected limb, and they will eventually be fitted for a lymph garment.
